Keiko's V-E-T visit

Well it's me, the Hooman at your service. We'll find out everything on Monday when Keiko's blood work comes in. They said it could be a bunch of things...all bad. Diabetes, thyroid problems or heart problems... She heard a heart murmur but also said that could be caused by stress which she was really scared after they shaved her neck to take blood and took her temp in a not so pleasant way then injected her w/fluids because she was dehydrated. It was weird because it moved under her skin like a water balloon. Poor kitty...also got a shot of penicillin for good measure. She seems like her normal meowy leg-rubbin self today but I still have not seen her eat more than 5 pieces of cat food or drink.
She was about 11 pounds at her vet visit in October, and yesterday she weighed in at 8 lbs.
I am worried because they said if it was a real heart murmur she's going to need an ultra-sound and all sorts of other tests and medicines. It's kind of scary and I"m really worried about my little baby cat :(

  1. Just real quick hooman, I have a kitty on my blog that also had an expensive vet bill and they somehow set up an account on here where they got donations (probably from there followers) that helped them pay. Do you want me to ask how they did it???? Lemme know...

  3. well if it IS hypertrophic cardiomyapthy (which is common in bigger cats) it's treatable. diabetes is treatable. both are actually curable if caught early, and it seems like they are. I have experience with both, so if you need someone to bounce things off of, lemme know, especially if it's diabetes, which seems to be the likely candidate. hopefully, it's just a sick cat though and nothing more serious. sometimes they just get icky!

  4. Lots of purrs for Keiko!

If it's hyper-t, that's also treatable via meds (pills or transdermal gel) or via surgery (not common in North America, more common in the UK, I believe) or via the I-131 (radioactive iodine injection). The I-131 is the best shot at cure, is about 98% successful, but is very costly.

My Annie is hyper-t, but the closest facility that does it is 2 hours away and I have no vehicle. It's also very costly, was $1200 plus tax when I checked into the cost last fall, plus all the pre-tests and follow-up, etc.

In Annie's case, she gets transdermal meds twice a day and has been doing fine, at least for now.

Good luck...and good luck with the vet bills. In the past 16 months I've had $4000 in vet bills, not counting all the taxi fares to and from my vet clinic, and oh, I'm freakin' deeply in debt again! Ah, but we can't let our fur kids suffer, so there's not much to be done about the costs.

PS My aunt had a beautiful orange tabby who lived for years with diabetes. She did have to learn to give him insulin shots twice a day and eventually he went blind but that wasn't a problem.
